Hi Rick,
I'm Henry's dad. Henry the sheltie pup who graduated on May 12th from your class. Henry's doing well. Your training of me on how to handle the "H Bomb" and his training of how to listen to me was fantastic! My wife and daughter are the ones who still need a Henry training tweak now and then. All's good.

We're interested in Henry becoming a therapy dog. His demeanor is excellent, still got some puppy in him at 11mos old. We feel he has potential and would like to see if we can have Henry help others feel as good as he makes us, extended family and friends feel when they see him.

Sincerely,
Steve Strok

I saw you on a tv show one night. Please pass my experience on to others so another dog won't be given to a shelter or put down. I got a puppy from a breeder and after about a year or two he would shoot up from sleeping and go into attack mode and bite me to the point of drawing blood. (he is only 10 lbs.) He was not born with good genes. By the time he was three I had paid for 2 luxating patella surgeries and cataract surgery in both eyes. I thought this had traumatized him and I can't tell you how many vets said they didn't think so. This little guy was very socialized, loves people and animals and is not fearful and very loving. I live in Fox Lake and there is a dog grooming and day care here. They have a dog trainer there who said it sounds like a neurological problem. Sure enough I go home and google and find out it is parasomnia in dogs. Which also occurs in humans. The dog is not even awake when he bites you. It has to do with REM movement and sleep. It is too complex to write here but please make people aware of this for these poor creatures who can't speak for themselves. I never gave up on him because I knew he was not mean. He's going on eight years and he's my best buddy, just aware of the problem and deal with it. I am so sad some people put the dog down and give them away when they don't know the real reason a dog is acting like this. And the vets don't know...that is what amazed me. And a dog trainer did! God bless you guys and I hope this helps some people out!

Hi Alex,
I have for the longest time wanted to get in contact with you about my English Springer. I had taken her to you basic training classes when I first got her 10 years ago. She is a great dog and fast learner. But in the past year or so I've been having problems with her about being aggressive with my other dogs. I've even had the problem with her turn on me. I have taken her to the vet to see if there was something wrong with her which he stated no. How can I approach this problem to get her back under control. Right now I don't have that trust I had two years ago in her. I fear that she might hurt someone. Please let me know what to do.
You have train both my English Springers.

I thoroughly enjoyed your program at the Glenview Library last night--have already tried your hints and will keep trying. The Porty that doesn't like the phone needs alot of work but the 3 year old girl has caught on already. Then this morning I came to work and told one of my co-workers about this great program I saw--only to find out that she brings her dog to your Doggy Day Care! Greetings to Twister and Brandy and thanks again.

I thouroughly enjoyed the seminar at Glenview Public Library and the valuable information and insight provided. I didn't realize that you don't have to raise your voice to your dogs in order to communicate effectively and there was no better evidence of that then Alex's dog "Twister" who is deaf. Also, I didn't realize as the Alpha (pack leader), that I had so much power and control over my dogs at my fingertips. As I have two 3 month old Lab-mix puppies, I need all the help that Alex can give me. I look forward to learning more of his techniques. Hopefully, perseverance will pay off.

Tomorrow, which is Friday the 18th, I'm posting a blog about your presentation at the Arlington Hts Library, which my husband and I very much enjoyed. It will be at http://morganmandel.blogspot.com. We're the ones with Rascal, the deaf pit bull, who has issues with moving targets. Because of your suggestion, we'll be fitting a skateboard park in our future to see if see can get her more accustomed to them.

We caught your show tonight on public television. Rascal is very much like Twister in that she knows when one of us enters the house even if she's in the other room. Also, she does have a strong bark. When we adopted her, we weren't told she was deaf. No one knew about it because she was a puppy and very alert. There are advantages. When the doorbell rings or when it's thundering, she is not concerned. If dogs bark at her from houses when we walk down the street, she just keeps walking.

We hope to catch you again at the Mt Prospect Library on Nov. 10 to hear more of what you have to say.

Thanks for coming to Arlington, I always learn something new at your presentations. My current foster is an 8 month old border collie/basset or corgi mix. He has gotten very reactive to some dogs at our weekly adoption events. There doesn't seem to be an obvious pattern in what dogs he likes or doesn't like. He wants to play with some, others he seems fine but then turns ugly, others he barks non-stop and his hair stands up. If I'm walking with him and see him start to stiffen up I correct and change direction until we can walk past the dog without issue. If we're sitting down I have him "watch" me or get up and walk away. What should I be doing? Is there any way to figure out why he reacts badly to some dogs & not others? He lives & plays with a 15 yr old Tibetan (a foster we couldn't place) & has been fine with dogs who have visited the house. Thanks.
